Customer had original DX-7, presented with a nasty pop and burning smell, and a ‘dodgy’ output jack.
This keyboard was made for servicing, a few screws and the lid hinges up. Lovely. Then the cause of the stink was obvious, infamous RIFA suppression cap gone south:

Also noticed memory backup battery (soldered to board) which by now was dead:

Output jack falling to pieces:

Arc suppression cap replaced:

New jack obtained and fitted:

Memory corruption evident (and weird sounds!):

Battery holder fitted (to aid future replacement) and new CR2032 supplied:

Reloaded the internal memory patches from the external cartridge, and tested memory voltage reading:

Sliders very scratchy so board extricated and Deoxit F5 applied:

All sounded very good (played a bit for 80’s nostalgia), given an external clean up and touch up of paint at various places and back with the customer.
