Customer had recently obtained this excellent Sony Walkman but had slipping belts.
At first thought this wasn’t going to be an easy fix, as had another walkman in the past which would have needed about 30 wires desoldered from unmarked locations to gain access!
However this one we had a service manual available if needed, but in the end the board just lifted up out of the way, which was nice 🙂 Capstan and belt removed:

The smaller belt was really tiny, probably 0.5mm square cross section, ball point pen for scale:

A belt kit from Decktech was acquired:

A bit fiddly to fit the smaller counter belt but got there.

And all is good again 🙂

A bit of research on this model reported that the speed control IC CX20084 can be vulnerable to overvoltage damage (6V is apparently rated limit), therefore suggested to only ever use NiMH batteries with this unit, rather than alkaline as their nominal voltage is lower at 1.2V, and some alkalines could measure 1.6V+ (combining to 6.4V or more). Another advantage is it negates the risk of any alkaline leakage concerns.
