Tape mechanical optimisation

Mechanical Overhaul.

Magnetic tape recording demands microscopic tolerances. A single aged belt, glazed idler tyre, or misaligned guide can easily double your wow and flutter levels. A mechanical overhauls involve transport teardowns, old-grease removal, and precision lubrication to guarantee perfectly stable tape handling.

  • Full mechanical inspection, teardown where needed for cleaning and lubrication
  • Ultrasonic parts cleaning
  • Precision bronze bearing lubrication using specialised synthetic oils (like Anderol 456).
  • Belt, idler tyre, and pinch roller replacement where necessary.
  • Accurate calibration of tensions and pressures using force gauges.

Electronic Alignment and Calibration.

Excellent playback and recording frequency response cannot be achieved by ear alone. I use professional calibration tapes and advanced audio analysis software to tune your machine’s circuitry directly. From fine-tuning head azimuth to minimising bias leakage, your deck is balanced precisely to match your preferred tape formulation.
